How the country reacted to govt’s Rs 500, Rs 1000 note banned

Tuesday night’s announcement of abolition of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes has sparked wide-ranging reactions from across the country. While many say they have been inconvenienced and are being forced to endure hardships, some have welcomed the move.
HT reporters spoke to people in various cities and towns to gauge the public mood.

Hyderabad:
-A Yadagiri Rao, 78, noted Telangana painter: “Last night, I went home in a cab after my painting exhibition. The cab driver refused to accept Rs 500 note and I had no other currency. I had to borrow Rs 200 from my neighbour to pay him. I think Modi should have given at least 24 hours.”
-P Achyuta Rao, 55, rights activist: Perhaps Modi government is habituated to making such last- minute announcements, as it does on petrol and diesel price hike at the eleventh hour every fortnight. Such sudden announcement hit the common people hard.
-P Pavan, 45, Vijayawada: “I may have to postpone my house-warming ceremony slated for November 11. I have no other currency, except of higher denominations. What can I do?”
Chennai:
-Praveen Sudevan, 23, journalist: “I usually eat from the dhabas that don’t accept card payments. I had around 400 bucks on me when the announcement was made. I think it’s a good move by the Centre to curb black money, but I also want to know how this move affects people less privileged such as domestic help and daily wage labourers.”
-Prabhakaran, 42, tea seller: “I’m worried about this. It’s supposed to go after the black money that the rich have, but people like me earn and save differently from people like you. Most of what I make in a day’s work is in change - but what I save after a week’s rent and groceries is usually kept in Rs500 notes. I am confused about what to do - do I need to have a bank account to exchange the money?”
-Shaktivelli, 50, domestic help: “Whatever I manage to save after working and paying bills I usually keep in Rs 500 notes around the house. I have a small sum stashed away just in case - I was hoping to use it for my daughter’s wedding. I have no bank account, and am confused about what I should do now.”
Mumbai:
Abhisekh Pandey, 35, employee at share broking firm: “With ATMs shut for two days I am saving every piece of loose change on me”.
Satish Nayak: Owner, Idli House: “Small restaurants are the major sufferers as we don’t accept credit cards and people are having problems in cash. Business is down 50% since morning.”
Punjab:
Rashmi Sandhu: “I had a tough time paying to the cab driver. I had just Rs 5 00 note and the cab driver was not ready to accept it. After much pleading the driver accepted the currency. I don’t know how will we survive for next two days.”
Talwinder Kaur, wedding in family: “We do not know how to manage the wedding shopping. For two days we are stuck with no ATMs functioning and banks closed. The government should have give us some time to make arrangements.”
Diwakar Sahoonja, trader: “We are not accepting Rs 500 or Rs 1000 notes. We are encouraging people to pay through debit and credit cards. It is just an inconvenience for two days and we are hopeful the new notes will be circulated in the market after two days.”
Alok Diwan, software professional and resident of Panchkula: “We hardly have currency notes in denomination of Rs 100. The government did not give us time to plan. There are long queues outside petrol pumps and also they are not offering any change.”
Shikha Sharma, housewife: “I had gone to buy milk and bread in the morning but the vendor refused to accept Rs 500. There is panic all round and no one wants to take the burden of exchanging this denomination later.”
Kolkata:
Subrata Shau: Businessman, 52: “I am in deep trouble. I have a small manufacturing unit and a lot of transactions happen with cash. With the banks and ATMs closed and all Rs 500 and 1,000 notes out of circulation, my business will be terribly hit for a few days.”
Rina Sarkar: retired teacher: “Only a few days ago I took out Rs 15,000 from the ATM for household expenditure. The entire money except Rs 500 -- five notes of Rs 100 -- emerged in Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. I have no idea of what I am going to do now. The grocer flatly refused to accept the notes.”
Asesh Sengupta, entrepreneur, 41: “I am supposed to withdraw money from my bank and make payments to a number of vendors as I am getting married on December 2 but I just can’t take out the money not only today, but for a number of days. If there is no way out, I may be forced to cancel the celebrations.”
Raipur:
-Rahul Divakar, 34, Bhilai: “There is a marriage ceremony in my family in Bihar next week. I was assigned to buy many things but now I have no option. I have to deposit the cash and wait for the new currency. Each and every friend of mine is suffering from similar situation. What kind of decision is this? There should be a process and people should be given time before banning Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes.”
-Rajat Khare, Raipur resident: “Rich people never stack notes, rather they cunningly invest in properties, shares, investment schemes and other kinds. It is the middle and lower class like us who stack or save cash and who will be badly affected by this decision.”
-Kamlesh Tiwari, tea shop owner in Raipur: “I have to close my shop for next few days because I have no money to buy anything. I had four notes of Rs 500 (Rs 2000 cash) but it will not work now.”
Trade body reactions:
-Mahesh Singhania, chairman, Federation of West Bengal Trade Associations: “I urge the trading fraternity to declare all India trade bandh & non-cooperation movement for the next 96 hours. The whole economy is bound to collapse at least up to the time the existing higher denomination notes get exchanged with the new currency papers. Educated people may be able to adjust or stand by this shock but not the uneducated ones.I appeal to the legal fraternity to file PIL.”
-Harshavardhan Neotia, president, FICCI: “This is an extremely bold move by the PM and will have a debilitating impact on the parallel economy in the country as well as terror financing. FICCI completely supports this move of the government. “There could be some inconvenience that this change may lead to for the people of our country for a few days. However, we are sure that government and RBI will take adequate measures to ensure that the transition happens smoothly.”
-Chiranjeev Singh, chairman of Chandigarh Beopar Mandal: “The traders are authorised to deposit their sale proceeds into the banks. Small-time traders do not have much problem but the new currency should be supplied in market soon. Debit and credit cards are accetable. We will give credit and take payments later.
Jitendra Barlota, working president, Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce: “Hundred rupee notes are difficult to find as most of time ATMs were giving out Rs 500 notes. Small traders were totally dependent upon Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes, hence they will be suffering for next one month. Secondly, the consumer which is mainly middle class and lower class, will not be able to purchase goods because they have no cash.”
-Ganapati Ramachandran, president-elect of South Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry: “It is a bold initiative but how efficient would it be, remains to be seen. It would be difficult to carry out business in the short run, but in the long run it would be beneficial. It will change the way business is done in India and India will conform to the globally accepted standards and practices.”
- CH Venkatachalam, General Seccretary, All India Bank Employees Association: The initiative will not help in fighting black money as it is stashed away in foreign banks, foreign currency, gold or other assets. Everyone knows that black money is mostly in foreign currency, in foreign banks, in gold or in properties and less in cash. Which is why, this would not help in detecting black money.”
-Vivek Sahu, spokesperson of Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT): “This is really a surgical strike for businessmen. Businessmen have refused to accept the notes of denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 1000. The trading has stopped totally and buyers are also facing trouble in it.”
-Prashant Bhatia: Ladhu Udyog Bharti, Uttar Pradesh: “The decision of the government to abolish Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes will help eliminate corruption and target black money. The problem for common man is temporary but those who have black money will face trouble, especially the politicians.”
Adarsh Shetty, president of Indian Hotels and Restaurant Association (AHAR), Mumbai:“From morning, patrons eat and then pay us these scrapped notes. Even we have no change to pay them back.”

Rs 500, Rs 1,000 notes banned: Rahul Gandhi's jibe against PM Modi is unmindful of public opinion

PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced scrapping of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. The surprise move triggered panic reactions. Stay with us for live updates

The Indian PM announced 12 AM of Aug 9 2016 will banned of Rs. 500 & 1000 note.

The Congress vice-president is deeply agitated. He thinks that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not acted in national interest. It's not a crackdown against corruption, black money, benami property or terror financing chain, but it is a move by a whimsical Prime Minister who is bent on harassing ordinary citizens of his country.
Rahul took the onus on himself to make Congress' official position on the subject. In a series of tweets, he blasted Modi: "Once again Mr Modi shows how little he cares about ordinary people of this country - farmers, small shopkeepers, housewives - all thrown into utter chaos". In another tweet, he said, "While the real culprits sit tight on their black money stashed away abroad or in bullion/real estate. Well done Mr Modi. Yet another tweet said, "One Q for the PM: How is replacing 1000 rs notes with 2000 rs notes going to make black money hoarding a lot harder?"
Rahul is completely unmindful of the fact that the public has hailed this move — a closely-guarded secret till he made it public — the swiftness of which nobody could have ever imagined in the wildest of dreams. Either Rahul Gandhi has not heard PM Modi's address to nation and the subsequent briefings made by RBI Governor, Finance Secretary and other top officials or if he heard and understood it then one gets an impression, which is not healthy for him, that he is taking side of loaders and hoarders of black money and fake currency
Yes, there would be short term problems for citizens spread across all class from a lowly daily wager to a high ranking executive, from petty trader to a big businessman, but then after a while these challenges before them are surmountable, if the money is legitimately earned. But to say that this amounts to harassment of common men and allows the real culprits to have a free run is a reflection on the top Congress leader's wisdom and understanding.
Even his present and potential allies, like JD(U) and SP are not on his side. The Congress vice-president also seems to be caring little for most common social wisdom that politics is about public perception. By making his stand public, he has not done any service to himself and the party Indian National Congress, he and his mother heads.
He, however, could be right in one broad sense — "all thrown into utter chaos". One potential area where this supposed chaos would reflect most would be in coming elections in Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Punjab and later in Goa.
It is well known that the cost of elections keeps on rising to new high and new methods of pumping ill-gotten money in elections is devised in each. Neither the funding of political parties, nor is the financing and expenses of the electoral process transparent. The loads of cash stocked by political parties and individual candidates through non-transparent or illegitimate means are used freely. The Election Commission and its observers are always at wits to figure out its spread.
With Modi's announcement to abruptly discontinue existing notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, the huge underground cash pile with parties and candidates have become waste papers. This effectively means that in the coming elections and thereafter, at least for next few years elections will be cheaper — no more transportation of cash in gunny bags, no more transportation of cash in ambulances, something which had sprouted first in 2008 Karnataka elections, no more transportation of cash in VIP and VVIP cars and choppers or in fruit and grain trucks. The Election Commission officials will be pleased to be relaxed a bit. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said "if elections become cheaper with this decision it's a good beginning."

Besides who wins and who loses, the coming UP elections will throw another curios aspect — how to fight elections with less money or without black money. New innovative methods will have to be found and the political parties — BJP, Congress, SP, BSP, Akali — and other challenges lay there. Those who cannot innovate on campaigning style will potentially face losers' prospects.
Jaitley also responded to Congress' charge that ordinary people would feel harassed. Minor inconveniences could be there but the government was taking measures to minimise those. He argued that it is "rare that government takes a decision that honest persons would feel that it pays to be honest and dishonest persons to worry. This decision will force the way people spend and keep their money."

Kamal Haasan & Gautami

In a development that is bound to shock their many fans, actress Gautami Tadimalla confirmed that she has separated from her partner, superstar Kamal Haasan, ending their relationship of 13 years.

The TOI and IBT reports stated that Gautami put up a post titled "Life and Decisions" in which she shared the reasons for her separation from Kamal Haasan.
"It is heartbreaking for me to have to say today that Mr Haasan and I are no longer together. After almost 13 years together, it has been one of the most devastating decisions that I have ever had to make in my life. It is never easy for anyone in a committed relationship to realise that their paths have irreversibly diverged and that the only choices in front of them are to either compromise with their dreams for life or to accept the truth of their solitude and move ahead. It has taken me a very long time, a couple of years at the very least, to accept this heartbreaking truth and come to this decision," Gautami wrote in her blog post.
Gautami said that she seeking neither sympathy nor assigning blame, in going public about the end of her relationship.
"I have understood through my life that change is inevitable and human nature will define that change for each individual. Not all of these changes might be what we expect or anticipate but that does not, in any way, negate the very real impact of these diverging priorities in a relationship. This decision to set forth on my own at this stage in my life is perhaps one of the most difficult decisions any woman will ever have to make but it is a necessary one for me. For I am a mother first and foremost and I have a responsibility to my child to be the best mother that I can be. And to do that, it is essential that I am at peace within myself," she wrote.
Gautami also alluded to how her relationship with Kamal Haasan started, back in 2005. The star had just divorced his second wife Sarika at the time.
"It is no secret that I have always been a fan of Mr Haasan's since before I came to the film industry and I continue to admire and cheer on his monumental talent and achievements. I have stood by him through all his challenges and they have been precious moments for me. I have also learned a great deal from working with him as costume designer on his films and I'm proud that I was able to do justice to his creative vision in those films. Along with all of his accomplishments to date, I know that there is much more to come from him for his audience and I look forward to applauding those successes," Gautami said.
She added: "I would like to say that I am sharing this monumental happening in my life because I have always lived my life in your midst, with dignity and grace to the best of my ability at all times, and all of you have been a part of my life's journey in so many ways. I have received so much of love and support from you through the past 29 years and I would like to thank you for the many ways in which you kept me going through the darkest and most painful times in my life."
Recently, Gautami was in the news when reports emerged of an argument between her and Kamal Haasan's daughter Shruti on the sets of Sabaash Naidu. The comedy, being simultaneously made in three languages, features Kamal and Shruti, while Gautami was in charge of the styling. Shruti and Gautami apparently didn't agree on the 'look' the latter had come up with. Shruti's spokesperson issued a statement denying any disagreement had taken place.
An industry source had commented on Shruti's relationship with Gautami at the time: "Shruti and Gautami have always shared a good equation. Shruti and her dad share a very lovely and open relationship thanks to which Shruti has been very welcoming of Gautami into their little family. Gautami was present in Chennai for Shruti's birthday bash as well and their comfortable chemistry was there for all to see."

Cyrus Mistry and TATA group and Sons

Big shakeup! Cyrus Mistry removed as Tata Sons chairman, Ratan Tata steps in

The board of Tata Sons shocked corporate India by sacking Cyrus Mistry as chairman four years into the job as Ratan Tata emerged from retirement to wrest back control of the group that bears his family name. The unprecedented move could spark a battle between two of Mumbai’s oldest business families, which share close ties — the Mistrys own about a fifth of Tata Sons, the group holding company.

Tata Sons said a selection committee will choose a permanent replacement for Cyrus Mistry in the next four months. Tata, 78, who quit in 2012 after more than 20 years in charge, will serve as interim chairman of India’s biggest conglomerate during that period. Mistry, 48, remains a Tata Sons director. Tata, who has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi informing him of the move, is likely to meet group CEOs on Tuesday.

Neither Tata nor Mistry could be reached for comment amid speculation about non-performance and undermining of the group's value system. Tata said in a note to employees that he'd agreed to serve as interim chairman "in the interest of stability of and reassurance to the Tata Group."

Cyrus Pallonji Mistry was removed from his position as chairman of the $100 billion conglomerate Tata group on Monday. Former spearhead Ratan J. Tata has been appointed as the interim chairman of the group and a selection committee has been formed to choose Mistry’s successor. The appointment committee has been accorded a time period of four months to complete the task as per the company’s article of association.

Cyrus was also seen as the natural heir to the Tata group as his billionaire father owns an 18.4 percent stake in Tata group, largest stake of any shareholder in the group.
Here are the key decisions Mistry took during his time at the Tata group at the helm:
According to Mistry himself, over the last three years, the operating cash flows of Tata group grew by over 30 percent CAGR. However, he reformed business practices in the group mandating the requirement for group companies to earn the right to be part of the portfolio and also earn “the right to grow”.
During the same period, the company’s gross debt increased by 2 per cent due to increased cash and capital expenditure from projects but at the same time the cash and equivalent assets grew at around 10 per cent. The net debt of the group also decreased by 3.3 per cent during the time, so Mistry’s tenure saw reduction in debt strain on the company.
He pruned several companies from the portfolio and even changed the structure of the company’s hospitality arm from owning properties to one managing properties across the globe. A huge 70 per cent of the group’s revenue comes from abroad. A majority of the group’s capital expenditure under Mistry has been abroad.
Grasping the need to expand the company’s digital signature in the industry, apart from having the hugely successful TCS, Mistry added the digital platform–CliQ- an ecommerce platform. He also added Tata iQ which is a big data company and is rapidly growing in the field of data analytics. Finally, the group added Tata Digital Health which expanded the group’s medical business forays into e-healthcare and telemedicine taking medical care beyond physical impediments. TCS doubled its profits during the time overshadowing all competitors.
In pruning measures, Mistry was also involved in prospective selling off of long products businesses like the ailing Tata Steel in Europe due to drop in demand and massive competition from cheap Chinese supply. Also during his time, Tata teleservices failed to come out of its negative networth.
After Mistry took the position, Tata Motors focused on passenger vehicles section aiming for two launches every year. This has in turn changed customer perception about the company and lifted Tata Motors’ sales.
The group under Mistry has also tried to expand its business in the defence manufacturing business with several key contracts in the pipeline. Material sciences has been a major fillip to their defence manufacturing business during this time.

Narender modi

Narender Modi is best Known for rising From Humble Beginning To Become Prime Minister Of India.

Synopsis

Narendra Modi grew up in the town of Vadnagar in India, the son of a street merchant. He entered politics as a youth and quickly rose through the ranks of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a Hindu nationalist political party. Modi later joined the mainstream Bharatiya Janata Party in 1987, eventually becoming national secretary. In 2002, he was alleged to be responsible for the deaths of more than 1,000 Muslims during civil unrest but was later exonerated. In 2014 he was elected prime minister of India.

Background

Narendra Modi was born in the small town of Vadnagar, in northern Gujarat, India. His father was a street merchant who struggled to support the family. Young Narendra and his brother sold tea near a bus terminal to help out. Though an average student in school, Modi spent hours in the library and was known as a strong debater. In his early teens, he joined Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, the student wing of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist political party.

Life Dedicated to Politics

Modi had an arranged married at 18 but spent little time with his bride. The two eventually separated, with Modi claiming to be single for some time. He dedicated his life to politics in Gujarat, joining the RSS in 1971. During the 1975-77 political crisis, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency, banning political organizations such as the RSS. Modi went underground and wrote a book, Sangharsh ma Gujarat (Gujarat in Emergency), which chronicles his experiences as a political fugitive. In 1978, Modi graduated from Delhi University with a degree in political science and completed his master’s work at Gujarat University in 1983.
In 1987, Narendra Modi joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which stood for Hindu nationalism. His rise through the ranks was rapid, as he wisely chose mentors to further his career. He promoted privatization of businesses, small government and Hindu values. In 1995, Modi was elected BJP national secretary, a position from which he successfully helped settle internal leadership disputes, paving the way for BJP election victories in 1998.

Gulbarg Massacre and Alleged Complicity

In February 2002, while Modi served as chief minister of Gujarat, a commuter train was attacked, allegedly by Muslims. In retaliation, an attack was carried out on the Muslim neighborhood of Gulbarg. Violence spread, and Modi imposed a curfew granting police shoot-to-kill orders. After peace was restored, Modi’s government was criticized for the harsh crackdown and he was accused of allowing the killings of more than 1,000 Muslims. After two investigations contradicted one other, the Indian Supreme Court concluded there was no evidence Modi was at fault.
Narendra Modi was reelected chief minister of Gujarat in 2007 and 2012. Through those campaigns, Modi's hard-line Hinduism softened and he spoke more about economic growth. He is credited with bringing prosperity and development to Gujarat and is seen as a corrupt-free and efficient administrator. However, some say he has done little to alleviate poverty and improve living standards.

Elected Prime Minister

In June 2013, Modi was selected to head the BJP’s 2014 election campaign to the Lok Sabha (the lower house of India’s parliament), while a grassroots campaign was already in place to elect him prime minister. Modi campaigned hard, portraying himself as a pragmatic candidate capable of turning around India’s economy. In May 2014, he and his party were victorious, taking 282 of the 534 seats in the Lok Sabha. The victory marked a crushing defeat to the Indian National Congress, which had controlled country politics for most of the previous 60 years, and sent a message that India’s citizens were behind an agenda of radical change.
Having received international attention, Modi has become further known for his meetings with President Barack Obama while also having diplomatic relations with neighboring country Pakistan.

Modi is the first Prime Minister of India who was born in 'Independent India’, that is, post-August 15, 1947. He is also the first Indian prime minister whose mother was alive when he took office. He holds the record of winning a Lok Sabha seat by the highest margin (about 5.70 lakhs; Vadodara).

Family and Personal Background of Narendra Modi

Narendra Damodardas Modi was born to a family of grocers in a town called Vadnagar in Mehsana district of Gujarat. He was born on 17 September, 1950 to Damodardas Mulchand Modi and Heeraben Modi. The couple had six children among which Narendra Modi was the third eldest.

Modi completed his studies against all odds. His saga of struggle began when as a teenager, he, along with his brother, used to run a tea stall near a railway station in Ahmedabad. He did his schooling from Vadnagar and obtained a master's degree in Political Science from Gujarat University. One of his school teachers described him as an average student but a brilliant debater. During his college days, he worked as a 'pracharak' (promoter) of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). He left home at the age of 17 years and travelled across the country for the next two years.

At a later stage, during the 1990s, when Modi served as the official spokesperson of the BJP in New Delhi, he completed a three-month long course in the US on public relations and image management.

One of his brothers, Somabhai, is a retired health officer who now runs an old age home in the city of Ahmedabad. Another of his brothers Prahlad, an activist on behalf of fair-price shop owners, has his own fair-price shop in Ahmedabad. His third brother Pankaj is employed with the Information Department in Gandhinagar.

Political Career of Narendra Modi

Narendra Modi always had the utmost zeal and enthusiasm to serve and help the people in need. As a young boy, Narendra Modi offered his services voluntarily to the soldiers at the railway stations during the Indo-Pak war in 1965. He also served affected people during the 1967 Gujarat floods. Modi started working in the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation’s staff canteen. Eventually from there he became a full-time proponent and campaigner, commonly called a 'pracharak', of the RSS. Modi later underwent training at the RSS camp in Nagpur. It is a prerequisite for any RSS member to take up the training course for holding any official position in the Sangh Parivar. Narendra Modi was given charge of the student wing, which is better known as Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). His contribution to the Anti-emergency movement impressed senior political leaders. As a result of this, he was eventually appointed the regional organiser of the newly-formed Bharatiya Janata Party in Gujarat.

Narendra Modi was an efficient organiser from a very young age. During the Emergency, he arranged for covert circulation of RSS pamphlets and also organised protests against the Emergency rule. During his RSS days, he met the two Jan Sangh leaders, Vasant Gajendragadkar and Nathalal Jaghda, who later founded the state unit of BJP in Gujarat. In 1987, the RSS deputed Narendra Modi to politics by recommending his candidature in the BJP. Modi’s efficiency was recognised and he rose to prominence after managing the Ekta Yatra for Murli Manohar Joshi.

BRICS Summit In Goa

BRICS in Goa: Pakistan will be very much the flavour of the summit.

As the host to the BRICS summit in Goa this weekend India will lay out the red carpet for the leaders of the group which was once seen to consist of the five emerging economies. Now, with the Brazilian and South African economies in slow motion, Russia struggling and China and India not growing as they earlier were, the grouping’s economic strength has taken a beating.
Despite this, the West still watches the moves made by BRICS warily and follows its announcements very carefully, especially since the substantive part of the summits have been political in nature in the recent years.
The summit declarations have gotten longer – the Ufa declaration was more than 70 paragraphs long — and have increasingly dwelt on topical political issues.
Since India is hosting the summit, it has invited countries from its eastern neighbourhood – under the umbrella of BIMSTEC that includes Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Bhutan and Nepal – for an outreach with the BRICS leaders. Begun at the summit in Fortaleza 2014, this practice was adhered by Russia in Ufa in 2015, when the host called leaders from the countries in the region. So, Brazil had called the Latin American countries in Fortaleza for an outreach with the BRICS leaders (that was Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first multi-lateral outing), and Russia had called the central Asian and countries part of the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organisation).
However, since Pakistan was seen as a spoiler in the region, India decided to exclude them from the regional outreach, one reason being it wanted to avoid the inevitable China-Pakistan axis at the BRICS summit. This was much before a majority of the SAARC countries decided to pull out of the SAARC summit in Islamabad, forcing its postponement.
Instead, India called the neighbours in the east – under the rubric of its Act-East policy.
But there is no doubt that the Pakistan factor will definitely loom large over the BRICS summit – especially after the surgical strikes in the post-Uri attack phase. India is cautious in not making the mistake of putting Pakistan at the fore of the agenda but through the arc of terrorism it will ensure that all countries from BRICS and BIMSTEC are on the same page.
It will be interesting to see how China responds to Delhi’s moves as they are Islamabad’s all-weather friends.
As a commentator in Goa rightly observed, “Whatever gathering the South Asia region may host, be it SAARC or BRICS or BIMSTEC, the India-Pakistan equation is always bound to play on everyone’s minds.”

In current times, India is one of the most important players in Brics — a group made up of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
The reason is that India is seen as a bright spot in a bloc whose clout has been undermined by economic woes.
Brics was formed in 2006 with the aim of using its growing economic and political influence to challenge Western hegemony. The nations, with a joint estimated GDP of $16 trillion, set up their own bank in parallel to the Washington-based International Monetary Fund and World Bank and hold summits rivalling the G7 forum. But the countries, accounting for 53 percent of world population, have been hit by falling global demand and lower commodity prices, while several have also been mired in corruption scandals.
Russia and Brazil have fallen into recession recently, South Africa only just managed to avoid the same fate last month while China's economy — the recent engine of world growth — has slowed sharply.
India by contrast is now the world's fastest-growing major economy in an otherwise gloomy environment and its GDP is expected to grow 7.6 percent in 2016-17.
Here is what we can expect from the 8th Brics Summit on 15 and 16 October in Goa:
According to the Brics 2016 website, the theme of India's Brics chairmanship is Building, Responsive, Inclusive andCollective Solutions.
India has adopted a five-pronged approach for the Summit which is called 'IIIIC' or 'I4C', which stands forInstitution building (to improve and institutionalise Brics cooperation), Implementation (of the decisions taken in previous summits), Integrating (integration of current cooperation mechanisms), Innovation (new cooperation mechanisms) and Continuity (keeping up with the existing mechanisms).

IANS also reported that Indian foreign ministry official Amar Sinha said the leaders would debate "global growth prospects, the role of Brics in leading this global growth and our contributions to it". He also confirmed regional security and climate change were on the agenda while Russia is expecting talks on Syria.
President Vladimir Putin's office said in a statement that "international terrorism and the Syria peace process" would be discussed as Moscow faces international anger over its airstrikes in support of the Assad regime.
China's Vice Foreign Minister Li Baodong meanwhile said the leaders would "exchange in-depth views on Brics cooperation and other global and regional issues", according to state news agency Xinhua.
Some of the more substantive talks are expected at bilaterals on the sidelines of the summit in the tourist state of Goa, with Modi expected to separately meet China's President Xi Jinping and Putin.
Brazil's new President Michel Temer, who replaced impeached Dilma Rousseff, will look to such meetings to boost trade ties and help drag his country out of its worst recession in half a century.
The summit comes amid some scepticism about the future of Brics, especially given India's efforts to reach out to the US and Europe since Modi — a one-time pariah of the West — came to power in 2014.
India will also be looking for Brics to condemn recent cross-border attacks blamed on militants in Pakistan that have spiked tensions between the neighbours, according to local media.
Analysts, however, are sceptical of India's chances of securing a joint condemnation given China's strong diplomatic support for Pakistan and Russia's efforts to forge closer defence ties with Islamabad.
"Agenda is drawn in a broad-brush manner. We will be looking at global economic and political situation. Obviously terrorism is very important part of that," Amar Sinha said.
Though he said the issue of China blocking ban of Jaish-e-Mohammad chief Masood Azhar by the UN will not be taken up at Brics because it was a bilateral issue with China and India does not want to bring such issues to the multilateral fora, he asserted that general principles pertaining to terrorism will be forcefully taken up.
And that will include "terrorism which is a global problem. It cannot be tackled individually and has to be tackled collectively. We cannot have a differential policy towards terrorism. There is no good terrorist or bad terrorist. So, these are the issues on which there will reiteration of national positions," Sinha said.
He added that "there would be very strong paragraphs (in the Brics outcome document) on terrorism including how to deal with countries that provide sanctuaries and safe havens... At NSA-level meet, we have also actually shifted the goalpost a little by talking about not only sources of finances but also sources from where they (terrorists) get arms and ammunition. These will be reflected in the Brics discussions."
Modi will have nearly 10 bilaterals. He will meet Putin on Saturday for the annual summit and the talks with Xi Jinping are expected to be held later that day. His summit with Brazilian president Michel Temer is scheduled for Monday. Bilateral meetings will see India exploring ways to enhance cooperation in key areas of security, defence, energy and investments, officials said.
Modi will also have talks with Prime Ministers of Bhutan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand. He will also have a bilateral with State Counsellor of Myanmar Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who is arriving in India on October 16 on her first visit to the country after assuming the office.
During the Modi-Putin meeting, key issues of defence, security, civil nuclear cooperation, trade and investment are expected to dominate the talks.
China will also call upon the group to make the bloc a free trade area and initiate measures to liberalise trade. "Observers have focused their eyes on New Delhi and have one question in mind: How much courage will it take for the trade ministers from Brics countries gathering there on Thursday for the summit meeting to promote greater cooperation?" an article in the state-run Global Times had said.
"It seems China is willing to open up its domestic markets to the other four member countries, but they haven't yet made quite the same commitment," it said.
However, as this article in Business Standard says, as a result of the fears of Chinese goods flooding the markets, a consensus has not been reached on China's suggestion for a Brics FTa.
